Troubl(e)/in(g) the Binary: Codifying the Racial Subject in the African Diaspora
A symposium organized by the 2014-2015 IRADAC fellows

Thursday, April 23 1:00-5:00
C204, CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue / NY, NY 10016

This half-day symposium will explore the construction and deconstruction of the racial subject in the Black Atlantic through two panels: “Challenging Definitions of Authentic Racial Character” and “(De)constructing Racialized Gender Norms in Diasporic Narratives and Cultural Practices.” The former will address legal and literary challenges to US tropes of authentic racial identity, and the latter will explore the changing gendered constructions of identity across the African diaspora spanning the last four centuries.

Cosponsored by the Advanced Research Collaborative, Africana Studies, and the Institute for Research on the African Diaspora in the Americas and the Caribbean
